Need a 3D printing curriculum for your middle school?
It’s one of the most common questions we get asked. Can the curriculum be used in a middle school? The answer is simple, YES it can. We have a range of different curriculums that are suitable for middle school students aged 11 – 14.
We recommend starting out with one of our beginners TinkerCAD based curriculums, as this is one of the easiest ways to quickly get started with designing for 3D printing.
TinkerCAD is free and used by millions of people around the world and has a fantastic ‘teacher classroom’ feature where you can easily onboard students without the need for student registrations.

Pre planned lessons ready to teach.
TinkerCAD is powered by an easy-to-use drag-and-drop pallet, where pre-modelled shapes can be easily edited to create unique 3D models for 3D printing. This is ideal for middle school students, as there is no steep learning curve involved and all abilities can access the software. With TinkerCAD being a browser based software, students can login from home and continue modelling, extending their learning beyond the classroom. This is one of the great features of the programme
We have two different options available to middle schools looking to integrate 3D printing into their curriculum. They are the beginner 3D printing lessons or the TinkerCAD Code blocks curriculum.
Both are great starting points for teaching 3D printing. They are fun, ready to teach and tried and tested in classrooms around the world.
The Tinkercad code blocks curriculum is especially popular with middle school teachers as students can draw upon their knowledge of Scratch coding to design 3D models to print, linking computing knowledge with design skills.
Ideal for middle schools starting out with 3D printing
With all the lessons being pre-planned and ready to teach, investing in learnbylayers is proven to impact teaching and learning and aid progression in the classroom.
Each lesson comes with a lesson plan, teaching powerpoint, printable lesson tasks, homework tasks and answer sheets. Also included with each curriculum pack are video tutorials and STL files to 3D print. These are ideal if you are brand new to teaching 3D printing and would save hundreds of hours of planning.

Download the files
Each lesson pack comes with downloadable and editable files giving teachers the flexibility edit the curriculum if required. We find most schools start out with the curriculum in its original form and after they have embedded 3D printing into their school, they become more confident to experiment with the content.
One of the benefits of 3D printing in the classroom includes increased engagement of learners in STEM subjects. if you work in a middle school and are looking to enhance your STEM curriculum, then our lesson resources will help you achieve an up-to-date curriculum fit for the needs of the 21st century.
The resources have been used in classrooms around the world and have been extensively reviewed. To learn more about what teachers say, visit our review page to find out more.
