How Does a 3D Printer Work? Free Interactive Guide
How does a 3D printer work? It’s a question many students ask when they first see a 3D printer turning a digital design into a physical object.
Our new free interactive 3D printer guide gives students a simple, visual way to find out.
Created by Learnbylayers for schools, teachers and students, the interactive resource lets learners explore the parts of a 3D printer, understand what each component does and discover how an FDM 3D printer creates an object one layer at a time.
How Does a 3D Printer Work?
Most classroom 3D printers use a process known as Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) or Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF).
A digital 3D model is prepared for printing using slicing software. The printer then feeds plastic filament towards a heated hot end, where it melts before being pushed through a small nozzle.
The printer precisely moves the nozzle and deposits the material onto the print bed.
Once one layer is complete, the printer moves to the next.
This process continues layer by layer until the complete 3D object has been produced.
Our interactive guide helps students explore this process visually.
Explore the Parts of a 3D Printer
Understanding the different 3D printer parts helps students understand the complete printing process.
The interactive guide introduces students to important components found on a typical FDM 3D printer, including:
- Print bed – provides the surface on which the model is printed.
- Extruder – controls the movement of filament through the printer.
- Hot end – heats the filament ready for extrusion.
- Nozzle – deposits the melted filament onto the print surface.
- Filament – the material used to create the printed object.
- Stepper motors – provide precise movement around the printer.
- Cooling system – helps control the temperature of the printed material.
- Motion system – allows the printer to position the nozzle accurately.
Instead of simply reading about these components, students can explore the 3D printer interactively and see how the different parts relate to each other.
From a 3D Model to a Finished Print
One of the most important concepts for students to understand is that a 3D printer doesn’t simply create an object instantly.
The process starts with a digital 3D model.
The model is processed using slicing software, which divides it into hundreds or potentially thousands of individual layers and generates the instructions required by the printer.
The 3D printer then follows these instructions to gradually manufacture the object.
Using the interactive guide alongside an actual 3D printer can help students connect the digital design process with what they can physically see happening inside the machine.
A Free 3D Printing Resource for Schools
The interactive guide has been designed specifically for 3D printing education.
Teachers can use it on an interactive whiteboard when introducing 3D printing to a class or allow students to explore the resource independently on computers and tablets.
It could be used within:
- Design & Technology
- STEM education
- Engineering
- CAD/CAM lessons
- Makerspaces
- 3D printing clubs
- Additive manufacturing projects
- Independent student learning
It can also provide a useful introduction before students begin their first practical 3D printing project.
Why Teach Students How a 3D Printer Works?
3D printers can sometimes appear almost automatic to students: create a model, press print and an object appears.
Understanding what happens between those stages gives students a much better appreciation of the technology.
Learning about the 3D printing process can also help students understand why common problems occur, including poor bed adhesion, blocked nozzles, incorrect temperatures and failed prints.
Rather than treating the 3D printer as a black box, students begin to understand it as a manufacturing system made up of different components working together.
Designed to Make 3D Printing Easier to Teach
At Learnbylayers, our focus is on making 3D printing easier for teachers to introduce into the classroom.
The new interactive guide complements our existing 3D printing curriculum, teaching resources and classroom materials.
Whether you’re introducing 3D printing for the first time or already have a school makerspace full of printers, the guide provides a quick and accessible way to explain the technology behind the machines.
