International 3D printing workshops with learnbylayers

Teaching and learning is what we are all about here at learnbylayers and we are pleased to share our latest workshop with international students as part of a session we delivered this summer. Students attended from China, South Korea, Russia and Bulgaria as part of a STEM summer camp with a focus on learning new STEM concepts whilst enhancing their English language skills.
Our founder Phil Cotton delivered a 3.5 hour workshop to students aged 12 – 17 on ‘what 3D printing is and where it is used’ and ‘how to design models for 3D printing’. As part of the workshop students started out learning the basics of TinkerCAD and how to create basic 3D models, then how to export and slice the models using CURA. Then finally students moved onto more complex challenging tasks designing an iphone case using Fusion 360.
With such a diverse range of languages being spoken we translated all the curriculum materials into the students native languages so they could follow the English version Phil was delivering. With Phil having been a teacher of 10 years (with students from international backgrounds) his skills and experience allowed for all students to make great progress and achieve the objectives of the session.
As well as designing for 3D printing using TinkerCAD and Fusion 360, students were also given the chance to experiment with the 3doodler 3D printing pens which proved a great success and allowed students to doodle 3D glasses and necklaces. Further learning topics included analysing different materials that can be used for 3D printing such as PLA, Woodfill, Carbon fibre, Algea, bronze fill, flexible materials and more. Students were given the chance to get hands on with all the resources and ask questions to enhance their understanding and broaden their English language skills.
