At KPIS International School in Bangkok, a new initiative is taking STEM education to the next level. As part of their professional development (CPD) requirements, all 30 of the school’s STEM teachers were enrolled in LearnByLayers’ Learn Fusion 360 course, which provided them with the essential skills in CAD design and 3D printing. This professional development workshop was not just about enhancing teachers’ technical abilities, but also about empowering them to create more engaging, innovative, and hands-on learning experiences for their students.
Why 3D Printing for Teachers?
The decision to enroll the entire STEM teaching team in this comprehensive training was driven by a clear rationale: equipping educators with the skills to integrate cutting-edge technologies into their classrooms. As one school spokesperson (Melvin Pantoja) shares, “We want our STEM teachers to have access to the best technology available to support their teaching. Since we believe 3D printing will play a significant role in modern STEM education, we chose to organize this professional development workshop.”
By learning Fusion 360 and mastering 3D printing, KPIS teachers are gaining the ability to design their own models, enabling them to enhance the curriculum with practical, real-world applications of design and technology. This professional training is designed to be a transformative experience, enabling our teachers to incorporate these skills into their teaching practice immediately.
How It Will Benefit the Curriculum
This training will have a direct and positive impact on the students. As teachers enhance their skills in 3D printing and design, they will be able to integrate these technologies into lessons, allowing students to explore the intersections of design, technology, and STEM subjects in a hands-on way. “Teachers will have the perfect chance to collaborate with our design teachers team, integrating their performance tasks with one another,” says Melvin. “Students can also see the real-world applications of design and 3D printing, understanding how these concepts relate to their subjects.”
This will open up exciting new opportunities for students to work on 3D-printed projects, deepening their understanding of key STEM principles in an interactive, creative way. The skills students gain will be essential, especially for those interested in pursuing careers in engineering or other STEM-related fields.
At KPIS, the school’s commitment to fostering hands-on learning is backed by top-notch technology. The school currently has 4 Ender-3 3D printers, with plans to expand and upgrade their fleet in the next academic year. This growing inventory ensures that teachers and students have the tools they need to bring their ideas to life.
Elective Courses to Inspire Future Engineers
Design classes at KPIS are offered as electives, providing students with the flexibility to choose subjects that match their interests. Many students who plan to pursue careers in engineering or other STEM-related fields opt for these design courses, ensuring that they gain the technical skills and practical experience necessary to succeed in these competitive areas
Why Choose LearnByLayers?
When searching for a provider to deliver high-quality 3D printing training, KPIS discovered LearnByLayers through an online search. The school was impressed by the course’s accessibility, especially the option to use Fusion 360’s free edition. As Melvin explains, “The majority of companies we found that offer 3D printing teaching services use premium versions of 3D rendering software, which can be expensive and only work on a single device. With LearnByLayers, we can use the free edition of Fusion 360, which allows us to invest the money saved into more 3D printers.”
This thoughtful, cost-effective approach allows KPIS to enhance both its teacher training and the technological resources available to students, maximizing the impact of their investment in 3D printing.
Looking Ahead: Continuous Improvement
KPIS is dedicated to the ongoing development of its 3D printing program, and future plans include incorporating even more resources and support for both teachers and students. “Beginners in 3D printing would appreciate an additional lesson on how to print and work with the various software tools that come with different 3D printers,” says the spokesperson. This commitment to feedback and continuous improvement will ensure that the program remains a valuable tool for both educators and students.
By empowering its teachers with the tools and training to integrate 3D printing into their classrooms, KPIS International School is setting a new standard for STEM education. The school is not only equipping teachers with the skills they need today, but also preparing students for the innovative, tech-driven world of tomorrow.
