In the fall of 2018, Technology teacher Chuck Hobbs integrated 3D printing into his school and chose learnbylayers as the curriculum for his classes. We can see that his students have been making great strides with 3D printing at such a young age and we want to give a big shout out to his classes for their fantastic CAD skills. 3D printing is an important skills that all of our students will need to be familiar with now, and in the future.  As our students begin to consider careers in the 21st century, the ability to think and design in 3 dimensions will be paramount to their success.  Diverse fields such as construction, internal medicine, aerospace, robotics, engineering and even culinary arts will all require a workforce that is familiar with 3D manufacturing. 

Learnbylayers has been an excellent way to teach the elements of 3D design to my middle school students who range in age from 10-13.

Beginning in fall of 2018, we instituted the Learnbylayers curriculum at Vista del Mar Middle School in San Clemente, California.  The technology program at Vista del Mar, already included graphic design, animation, robotics, coding and video production, so adding 3D printing was a logical step. 

Learnbylayers allowed for a student friendly way to introduce our pre-teens to the TinkerCad and Fusion 360 design platforms.  The students designed name tags, tool holders, desk organizers, fidget spinners and many other creation through easy to follow lesson plans. 

Everything that was needed to teach these skills was included in the curriculum.  Having tried to gather my own curriculum to teach these skills, finding Learnbylayers was a blessing.  My students have responded positively to these lessons and look forward to each class.

The students loved learning about the design process and being able to take home their creations.   It is difficult to put into words the wonder they displayed as they watched our Flash Forge printer bring their objects to life. 

I would highly recommend Learnbylayers to any teacher wanting to bring 3D design and printing into their classrooms.  I can’t wait to see what the future holds for my students now that they have learned how to create in 3D!
